Burning Permits

Open Burning season begins on January 15, 2024 and runs through April 30, 2024.

Burning Permit Application & Procedure for 2024

Seasonal burning permits will again be issued through a web-based permit application through a special online portal. This online portal will allow the Fire Department to view the open burning locations on a map which will then help assist us in public safety and emergency management.

Visit the online portal at Westfield.firepermits.com. The portal is now open register/create an account or log in with last year's username (email address) and password.  (WFD is not responsible for and cannot reset passwords.)  Use the "Lost your password" option to reset your password.

Please do not call Emergency Dispatch for questions regarding the status of your burning permit.  Questions should be directed to the Fire Department's Main Office (Monday through Friday) or the Deputy Fire Chief on Duty.

A seasonal permit is $25.

Apply for the permit and residents will then be immediately directed to Unipay to process the permit fee with an electronic check, debit or credit card. The UniPay payment process takes several steps and screens in order to complete the payment; just keep proceeding through their screens until you reach a screen that with a payment confirmation.  Residents will receive an email approval notification after receipt of payment.  The online permit portal and Unipay are now available to log in and apply for the seasonal permit and process the $25 seasonal permit fee.

Registering for the site, applying for a permit and immediately processing the payment can be done at anytime of the day.  However...

To activate your permit on the days you want to burn between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon, visit and log in to Westfield.firepermits.com to "activate burn".  Activating your burn before 9 a.m. is not allowed.  The activate button is not available if burning is not allowed and after 12 noon.

If burning is not allowed on a specific day due to weather conditions, a notification will be posted on the online portal and burning permits will be locked for the day.

Portal Tips:

Important!  The burning permit location is Google Map Based.  When entering the address of where you are burning on the permit portal, make sure you add "Westfield, MA" after the address.  You may need to separate the address and the city/state with a comma.  (For example:  34 Broad Street, Westfield, MA.)  You do not want to select an address in a different city and/or state.

The fire permits website can also be accessed with a smart phone. However, the step-by-step directions may differ.  For example, for the log in screen, you will need to press the 3 red lines in the upper right hand corner.  We hope to have instructions for applying, paying and activating from your cell phone available shortly.

Any residential property that has duplicate entries for a permit will receive a denial for the duplicate application(s).

On the UniPay payment site, you are able to "check out as a guest" instead of creating a user name and password. There are multiple steps when checking out through the UniPay process.  Keep proceeding through their website.
